    Big purchases and the economy

    Advertisements
First, let me preface this debate by saying: I am not in any way shape or form calling anyone out on this site. This is just an "in general" type of question! Actually, a good friend of mine sparked the question since her husband might loose his job soon, but they are still trying to a buy a house...

So, how do you feel about making big purchases right now (homes, cars, taking out loans) since the economy is so bad and people are loosing their jobs left and right?

Do you think it's still a good time to buy to help the economy, or smarter to maybe wait since jobs are so insecure?

If you have a secure job then I don't see a problem with it.

If you are financially stable and research prior to buying, you can get some really great deals right now, especially on housing.

Well in theory the only way the economy will get better is if people spend money, so as long as they do the research and what not I would say that is their choice to make.

I don't try to understand someone else' financial situation.

People have said to me "you cannot make THAT much at your job and if your boss loses the election next year, then what?" when discussing my buying a house. BUt they do not know my monetary situation.
this is like a bad movie, and i'd give it a 5 on my netflix

We just bought a house *close on the 31st* but we couldn't pass up the price or location! I think it depends on your situation. Dh is re-enlisting on Friday for 6 more years..so I think we know he is going to be pretty stable. I think you have to have something to look forward to or your drown in self pity!

Personally, it makes me nervous. I think our jobs are pretty secure, but not 100% because of all the teacher layoffs. We want to buy a house since you can get one for a decent price right now, but I can't bring myself to take the chance.
