It's not ideal, but it works, and it bypasses alot of the arguments and issues that come up if/when homosexuals are allowed to openly serve.

Been there/done that x1000 around here -- I'll say again, though, that my opinion is that the policy is one that needs to be overturned. I fully support the idea of homosexuals being able to serve just as openly as heterosexuals. What can I say, not a big fan of discrimination. I also feel that the only person DADT "protects" is the bigot/homophobe - it does NOTHING to protect the homosexual.

i think it should be a personal thing, not the governments. If your gay and want to shout it from the roof tops go for it. if you want to hangout in the closet, thats your decision also

Really, how does it protect them? If someone is gay and is being harrassed because of it they have to "tell" in order to report said harrassment. That telling results in the homosexual facing discharge. This is exactly why so many homosexuals who are in the military and are harrassed say NOTHING, tolerating the harrassment -- to me, that is protecting the perpetrator, not the victim.

You're right, to a certain extent.
My issue with it is that I don't want to watch men making out in my sleeping space, or on the mess decks, or anywhere else where I am required to be, for long periods, in close quarters.
Be gay on your own time, but don't shove your sexual orientation down my throat.
And if you want to tell me that it won't happen, talk to anyone on a mixed gender ship, they will tell you that even though it's against the rules, its common, to say the least.

    I now release the soapbox.

If they don't tell, or act on it, then no one at work knows their gay, not to mention they obviously joined the service KNOWING that they weren't allowed to do so.
