    Question Charging Kids Rent

    Advertisements
In another thread it was mentioned (by HateTank) that as a discipline step for unruly, ungrateful, hard to control etc. teens, one option to try and get them in line would be to charge them rent for living in your home.

I have mixed feelings about it and I was wondering if anyone else wanted to weigh in.

Hatetank if I got what you were saying wrong PLEASE let me know!!!!

ETA: I'm talking about charging a child under 18 rent for the "privilege" to live in your home.

Any step taken to regain control over a kid in that situation is, in my opinion, a good idea, and the rent thing is a REAL good one, but only if the kid has a job.

I had to pay rent as soon as I started getting a paycheck (and pay for collage, clothes, and anything else I wanted), and I was a fairly well behaved teen

Are you prepared to evict the child if he does not pay rent?
And what ages are we talking about?

I guess I'm in the minority but I have never had to pay rent. Even if I moved back home tomorrow, my parents would not even accept any money from me. Not even for food. And of course my kids right now are too little, but I dont think I would do it either.

See I'm not a parent so I've never walked in these shoes. But I feel like when you have a kid it's your responsibility until they turn 18. If they get a job and you want them to pay for extras (movies, games, fun items) that's fine.

Buy I just could never imagine myself charging my own kid to live in my house.

I'm for it! I have no issues once the kid graduates HS, and has a job. If they're a full time student, it would have to be reconsidered though.

Course I was a spoiled rotten kid. I never paid rent, never bought my own car or insurance... spoiled rotten I was!
