    Question A quasi religious thread

    Advertisements
I'm on an atheist LJ community and a member brought up an interesting debate.

A church is giving out food for the needy. A family goes up to get a box. They are atheist. Should they get food from the church or is it a xian only thing?

Why is the church asking the family's religious affiliation? I've never known a church to ask people what they believe before giving them something they need.

ETA: OK wait, I think I read the question wrong. Atheist or not, the family should get what they absolutely need. Who knows, maybe seeing the generosity and love that a church is handing out will guide them on a spiritual path. Never know!

I think anyone who needs it should be able to get help, regardless of religion. You're supposed to help all the poor, not those who just follow your religion.

I have also never heard of a church food pantry refusing food to people...but if they did, well....I don't think there is anyone who would be ok with that, it wouldn't even be a debate

Thats what I was going to say... Normally I have seen food drives for the needy, not food drives for the needy if they believe in XYZ religion.

However, some of the time there is a little lecture that goes along with getting the food asking if you have found God and all that good stuff, thats the only time I could see an issue arising... but I still dont think the church would say "you don't believe, give me back my box"

The church we attend on occasion has this tiny little waif of a preacherman who is always smiling, and I just envisioned him snatching the box back and frowning

It was more like a morality question, like should the atheist get the food even if he's not an xian and doesn't go to the church?

Why do you keep typing xian instead of Christian?

Most churches I know don't ask for any religious affiliation, they are giving it out of kindness and not looking to recruit people.
