    Government

    Advertisements
Do you agree with a paternalistic government/organization or do you think people should be free to make whatever decision they'd like to make?

paternalism - the attitude (of a person or a government) that subordinates should be controlled in a fatherly way for their own good

And do you think people know what is truly good for them or not. Or do you think outside factors cause them to make biased decisions?

    I'm confused?

Do I think there should be an anarchy? No.

No. There's a philosophy named Mill who believed that people should be able to live how they wanted as long as there was no direct harm caused to anyone else.

I'd be quite pleased with a big, fat utopian anarchy. Unfortunately, human nature makes it so that isn't possible. The jerks ruin it for everyone

Yeah, this is more of a hypothetical argument.

Here's the problem with that, its impossible for everyone to "live as they want to live" without harming each other in the process.

Well the problem with paternalism is that both sides actually want it in some definition of the word. The dems want social programs such as welfare to care for people. The republicans want to legislate moral decisions that people make such as abortion. So on the one hand dems want to "take care of people" by making sure no one is hungry or suffering in Earthly ways. The republicans want to "take care of people" by making sure no one goes to hell or acts immorally. Of course this is my view, but I would say given that everyone agrees that we should have a paternalistic society... just not in the same way.

Look at what happened when the banks failed. All of a sudden the Republicans were all about the bailouts even though they claim to "hate" socialism so much. As soon as you are looking at the destruction of something you care about (in this case, the economy and business) then your view of things changes.

I would say the same is true for things like "doing what you want" and "anarchy".. some people will think it SOUNDS like a great idea until someone comes in their house and steals all their crap. As soon as they realize there is no police force to call they will be begging for the government to come back and regulate society a little. LOL.
It's Halloween so.... you know, BOO!

We basically just had the same debate in my criminal law class. It's interesting to hear everyone's thoughts.

I believe that once you take away a person's accountability - then they no longer hold theirselves accountable.

So - our current "nanny" state is just bad news...when you make adult life-decisions FOR people it just takes away their ability to think on their own. Either in small tiny incriments- or in large chunks. Slow/fast ... eventually everyone becomes clueless and dependent.
