Would you have an issue with an Athiest being the head of the Religion department at a University?

it depends. As someone who has no real religion honestly I don't care, but I could see if I had a deep belief in my religion and found out someone was in charge who did not believe the same. it does beg to say how can they teach what they themselves don't follow.

i don't see why it's any different than someone who is religious, because it is the "religion department" meaning, not one specific faith.

so basically, if a hindu or muslim or christian, etc led it, it wouldn't matter, so i don't see a problem with an athiest doing it. just because they don't believe in a "God" persay, doesn't mean they are not knowledgeable on theology.

Absolutely. As long as they were knowledgeable about what they are teaching, their beliefs shouldn't matter. It's an educational class, not a church sermon.

i would actually prefer someone who is without religion to be the head of a religion department because it would leave them in a position to be open towards all religions and not biased towards one particular religion.

Because some people think of religion/the Bible as basically a story, and English lesson. That is how I view the Bible - and interesting book. I still have a VAST amount of knowledge on it, though.

Absolutely....if the person is knowledgeable and educated in religion why not? Just because his belief system is different than yours does not mean he won't do a bang up job.
