    Purple heart for mental illness?

    Advertisements
I read somewhere recently that the Pentagon has been thinking of perhaps awarding purple hearts for mental illness. What do you think of this? Do you think that by doing this that the value of the purple heart will go down? Do you think that it should be done?

I don't agree with this. I think the mental health issues that come from the deployments and war are big issues and need to be addressed...but a purple heart?? i do think that it will decrease its value. I wouldn't want to be the soldier saying "Hey i got a purple heart cuz i have PTSD" nope...

the purple heart is an award of honor. If they start giving it out for mental illness can you imagine the amount of guy/girls saying they have PTSD and things like that just to get it, and how would they decide what type of mental illness should get one?

No, I do not. PTSD can come from a cat dying or from being on the trigger end of multiple deaths of women and children. I am sure they won't hand them out like candy, but from the info given in the first post, no I do not think it is cause for a purple heart.

I think that recieving a purple heart for PTSD or the like isn't what the purple heart is for.

I think that A) there should be A LOT MORE HELP for those who have PTSD or the like and B) there should be a special medal just for them. At first thought for that, I thought it was silly to recieve ANY kind of medal for PTSD... but thinking about it... those people are hurt too, and just as much even if it isn't physical and they deserve the recognition for being hurt in combat.

but I would much prefer see choice A over choice B.... if only one has to happen.. it NEEDS to be A.

My husband would never accept a Purple Heart for his PTSD. He'd be mortified if someone suggested it.
