    Chemistry class experiment

    Advertisements
I was just telling DH about this yesterday and thought I'd share this story with all of you too and see what you think.

When I was in 11th grade my chemistry class made apple wine from scratch. When it was finally done we ordered Pizza after school was out for that day and drank our school-made wine in our chemistry class room.

    Your thoughts?

Were the drinking age 18 still, and everyone in the class was of legal age, then I'd be ok with it. We made kim chee in our chemistry class....

A chemistry teacher would be fired in this country, even if written consents were given by the parents. In this country the legal age to drink is 21, so I think that experiment in US high schools would be extremely inappropriate, not to mention illegal.

Also, if a US chem teacher conducted that and a student drank that not knowing alcohol shouldn't be mixed with the meds he/she was taking, it would a huge liability risk.

I would NOT be ok if my son had a chem class with an experiment where he wasn't old enough to consume to end product....

Yeah we didn't get to try it either.. the container didn't seal and the stuff went rancid... talk about STINKY!!

We did make ice cream though.. and that was cool.. If I remember right we used sweetened condensed milk, big red soda, rock salt and LOTS of ice...
