Thumb Down Not sure where to put this.

I've noticed a lot of people will say their SO is "in the sandbox" instead of in Iraq. Does this bug anyone else? I can't really put my finger on it, but it irks me (just the term "the sandbox" for Iraq, for clarification).

I think people use that term when they are trying to be OPSEC-conscious.

The "sandbox" can be Iraq or Afghanistan. I refer to them both as such so no, it doesn't bother me.

I guess I see where you are coming from...I do not refer to either of them with that term.

That's what our guys refer to it as. Plus, its referring to the middle east. Not just Iraq.

My husband has never referred to anyplace overseas as "The Sandbox." My dad used to say, "Across the lake," Which he thought was pretty funny, but I have also never heard him say, "The Sandbox." I never thought of telling someone the country that your SO is in as an OPSEC violation, so I just say, Iraq, or Afghanistan.

But there is a ethnic slur that starts with sand when some people talk about people from that area...So I see the point, that is why i dont refer to it as the sandbox.
