are you considered a member of your respective service BEFORE you go to boot/basic?

I was talking about this with another friend who was all riled up because there were a few younger people in her neighborhood who were all fired up about their "branch" of the military and their "boyfriend's branch of the military" before having completed boot. they have "marine pride" and "my boyfriend is a sailor" and stuff on their cars and they've not even done training.

    so i ask you this....

are you a sailor before you've completed basic?
are you a soldier before you've completed basic?
are you a marine before you've completed basic?

    etc etc

Nope, I dont feel that you are because you haven't gone through basic and are not even certain you can pass that.

    IMO:

you are not a sailor/soldier/marine until you've successfully completed bootcamp... plain and simple. graduating is a right of passage and induction into your selective service....

I don't believe so, because even though you've signed the enlistment contract, you've not followed through with the basic training.

Well, I'm what I am and I'm what I'm not
and I'm sure happy with what Iíve got
I live to love and laugh alot
    and thatís all I need

well according to the recruiters yes you are. you should conduct yourself with the pride of what you are representing. It depends if you haven't got to MEPS or taken the oath you are nothing, if you wash out, no you are not a sailor, solider, airman, marine, coastie whatever.

    I will miss you SOS...
Please be wary of what you post remember OPSEC is not just another acronym.

Nope, not until you complete Basic. Some people can't hack it and wash out. Then you aren't really a member are you?

I wouldn't consider someone one before they've completed training.

This interested me because dh has a friend who went through boot for the AF and flunked out and was discharged from school right after and he talks and gets all hyped about how he was in the military (he thinks it looks cool when he talks to girls too, lol) and all this and it's kind of funny to us because all he did was go through boot (which please don't get me wrong, is a big accomplishment), but he acts like he was in for years or something.

No. I don't think so. Basic is a right of passage. I think it's what MAKES you a member of the military (outside of the legal signing the contract stuff of course).

No. Once you complete Training - you are a Marine/Sailor/Soldier/Airman.
