When I do mine I add the roast, then some potatoes and carrots sliced up. In a measuring cup I put a packet of lipton onion soup mix and 2 cups of water. I mix it together and pour it over. Then cook it on med for 6-8 hours. The very last half an hour I take half a cup of water and 2 tablespoons of flour and mix together and pour that in and stir well to thicken the juice up just a tad.

Adding beef boullion is a good idea. Or any seasonings you like. My SO lives by Seasoning Salt. I like to put cut potatoes, carrots, celery and anyother veggie i have in there too. As for water, put (depending on your crock pot size) something like a cup or two of water in the bottom.
