Ombudsman here.
We are at NAS Lemoore, I do it for VFA-14 since January. Still new to it, but I just stay organized and keep sending out information to our families. I want them to learn to do things on thier own as much as possible, but know that I am here to help when they need it.

Survived 8 deployments...

I'm an Ombudsman too, just over a year. We're at NAS Whidbey Island. My biggest thing is to get a newsletter out every month to get information in the hands of the spouses directly. Before me and the other two at our command took over, most people were not even aware we had an Ombudsman. IMO getting the word out about yourselfs and being approachable is the best thing you can do. I volunteer on another committee which puts me in the squadron every week. That gets me face-time with the AD Sailors and makes them see me as more approachable. I've had a number of calls where the spouse has talked to their husband (usually deployed) and he hasn't known the answer and told his wife to call me.
The biggest barrier I've seen has been making people aware that their spouse will not get in trouble for them talking to me and asking a question! |

I don't know if any of you are aware, but there is an Ombudsman facebook page. It is only open to Ombudsman, so just look for it and when you send your request, let me know who you are and what command you are with on the request. Just do a search for "ombudsman" on Facebook.
