Weather over there
[Anyone know how cold it gets in Northern Iraq?]
. . . . I'm thinking of knitting some watchcaps for J to hand out at Christmas, but I'm not sure how warm or heavy to make them. Any input would be appreciated. TIA

I dunno about J, but my hubs wasn't allowed to wear any cover that wasn't issued to him.. Patrol caps and boonies ONLY.. A couple grandmas at church got together and crocheted hats for the guys, and they ended up mailing them to us SO's here at home for Christmas gifts..

It gets cold enough that he might like a hat -- or some hot cocoa or tea.
![]() Don't say where he is -- but here are average monthly temperatures for: Mosul: http://www.worldclimate.com/cgi-bin/...43+1102+40608W Kirkuk: http://www.worldclimate.com/cgi-bin/...1202+0019434G2 Keep in mind that those are averages. It'll get colder at night. If he's not in either of those places, try googling "city name weather almanac" and you'll get average temperature results.

I just don't want to go to all the work of making hats to find out they can't use them for one reason or another. Based on that website, they would be weather-appropriate. Thanks!

For some great patterns and ideas, check out the Ships Project. http://www.theshipsproject.com/ A woman from work knits for them all the time. Sorry though, I'm no help with the climate.

According to DH, it gets pretty cold. They'd probably appreciate the hats (if they're allowed to wear them, that is). When DH was in Iraq, someone sent them a whole bunch of crocheted hats. He has pictures of all the guys wearing them. They seemed to have a good time with them. I don't know how often they wore them, but they at least wore them for the pictures.
