I’m surprised none of you Americans seem to know it. Do you just...not have Italians?
Uhhh... have you been to Boston?!

Most of the people I met when I lived there were Irish American or Italian American. I'm Mexican American and I was often mistaken for Italian since so many people there are. So yes, we have a lot of Italian Americans in the US!

    I wasn’t being entirely serious

I have similar experiences to you that way, I think. “Hispanic” in general is not a big category in Australia - it’s growing, and a staggering percentage of the population was born overseas (this is actually creating big problems in parliament right now, with about twenty people who haven’t declared dual-citizenship properly) but Australia is a very long way to come from Latin America! The demographics of immigration are quite different, much more Asian than Latin.

Generally, because “Hispanic” is not a common category, I’m assumed to be either Italian or occasionally Maltese. My accent probably doesn’t help so much - the form of Spanish I speak is heavily Italian-influenced, so the accent that lingers in English is weirdly blurred.

Once or twice, I’ve had someone guess Greek, and I cannot for my life figure out why! I know about three words of Greek!

If you have so many Italians, why is your coffee so shit?
