    Opinions on white ink tattoos?

    Advertisements
Good idea or bad? I've don't, currently have any tattoos, but I've recently become interested in the idea of a small white ink tattoo on my wrist.

I've done some research online, and know there are risks (tattoos looking raised, yellowing, completely fading away, ect) and I think I could live with any of those, if on the off chance they happen to me. From what I've read, they do best on pale skin that is not exposed to very much sun. The underside of my arm is very pale and never tans or gets sun burned. I'm also aware of the upkeep, and possibly, probably, needing touch ups very few years. It'd be small enough that that'd be affordable. Plus, if it did start to look like shit, maybe i'd just get it filled in black. Those that know about tattoos, would that be possible?

Overall, what's your opinion on white ink?

I think they're really pretty if done right. If my skin was lighter, I'd get one.

Eta: coverups. I'd think that getting a white tattoo covered would be really easy.

By having it covered up, I just meant traced over in black....Not sure if that was clear.

Just for reference, we are thinking of doing this. But, I'd like to do it in white.

I think it REALLY depends on the artist. You want someone that knows how to do it. I've seen some that look incredible, but the majority you either can't tell or they look like crap.

oh for sure!! It's something that I would only have done by someone who has done it many times before and I can see them in their portfolio. Apparently, a lot of artists don't do it at all because of the failure rate.

Many tattoo artists aren't fans of full white ink tattoos because it is still a new and fairly unreliable ink (the yellowing, fading, etc. you listed.) also be aware that those "side effects" may not appear throughout the whole tattoo, as in 1/3 of it might turn yellow or pinkish, another third might fully fade away, and the other third may heal absolutely perfectly. In this instance simply attempting to trace over it in black would cause those inconsistencies to only become more noticeable. In that case you'd need to do a re-design cover up piece. Any reputable tattoo artist would either explain this to you up front or when asked. If anyone says it's flawless and just as good as black ink RUN!
