    Ball Attire

Have any of your balls been themed? If it was, did you dress to that theme or just wear a formal gown?

Our Air Force ball this year is rumored to be a 1940s theme. I'm all for themes, but I won't be dressing towards that theme because I have a few dresses I've been eyeing on Rent the Runway already and they haven't 'officially' announced anything about the ball yet.

How about doing a 40s style hairdo and makeup with your dress? this looks really pretty: http://www.flickr.com/photos/joshesk...n/photostream/

I absolutely love 40s style. The women looked so classy. I would try to go with the theme even if you do it in subtle ways with your hair and makeup.

    Eh, maybe.

To be honest, I will probably just dress up and let that be that. There is only one ball, once a year, and I just want to be fancy. We live so far from 'getting to be fancy' stuff I want to just look 'me' fancy, not costume fancy, KWIM?

When it's come to "themes", none of the balls I've been too have had people dressed for it -- it was mainly decorations, music, etc.

I don't think it's official yet, but at our squadron picnic people were talking about it. I hope they announce it soon because September is next month!

I wouldn't dress in 40's attire. More than likely they are talking about decorations etc.

I personally would totally dress to the theme to include hair, makeup and dress but that is because I adore the 30-50s formal wear wise.

But even if it is a theme you don't have to dress to the occasion. I have never been to a military ball so I have no idea if any of them have been themed.

The themed formal stuff I'd been to was mostly just in the decor. Some of the guys went with the theme (if it wasn't a uniformed event), but nearly all the women were just in regular formal wear, or regular formal ware with a few accessories (like a fan or something that's just held) as a nod to the theme. So you could get a fancy cigarette holder and some super long fake pearly, and put those on with a regular dress.

I've never been to a themed ball but there have been smaller occasions that are themed that I go all out for. We did halfway night with a roarin' 20's casino theme, I've gone to the dolphin scholarship auction that has been themed etc but none of the normally formal events that I've been to had a theme that you dress to.
