Not sure if i should look for something new, a little more fun!!

if its "balck tie" that means its formal...so either a formal cocktail knee lenght/tea length dress, or a floor length formal gown.

the dress you pictured is cute, but you need to find something a bit more formal, IMO.

Yes, a black tie affair is formal. So I'd say a long gown. The dress you have is really cute but it's too casual. Consider this, the guys will most likely be in tuxes, so that should give you a little clue. Something like this would be beautiful! Still simple, yet in an eye catching color!

I would go with something floor length for black tie. To me Black Tie is the most formal there can be. Have fun

I agree with the girls above about going long. I would also make it a little fun since it is new years. Maybe a little sparkle.

im scared i will be over dressed if i wear full length since the invite says cocktail party which makes it seem a little less formal... i would love to fine a formal-ish cocktail style dress but dont know where to look. I believe my neighbor is planning on wearing something knee length

You're in MN, correct? Go to the Jessica McClintock store in the MOA. They have formal dresses that are shorter, and also longer ones. Just keep in mind that "black tie" does mean very formal, and even though it says "cocktail party" on the invite doesn't override the black tie part. Here's some info for ya:

Where is the event? Maybe that will help determine what you wear. I'd probably be tempted to go knee length and beaded/sequined or something that makes it more dressy.
