What do they mean by "unwashed"?

So hair dyes (at least all the ones I've used) always say to apply to "unwashed hair". What does that even mean? Really, unwashed with all the product in it from styling, etc?
I've always just washed my hair the night before, not put any product in it, and then dyed it the next morning; because I just feel like all the product that I always have in my hair would somehow mess with the effectiveness of the dye.
So - which is it? Truly unwashed, or "clean" but not freshly washed? Does it even matter?
    Oh, hey. I'm back!

Unwashed = at least dirty for 12 hours with no products in it. the products in the hair will coat it and wouldn't allow for a proper dying in my opinion.

No product in it, but unwashed. Like wash your hair, don't put anything in it, give it 24 hrs (natural oils to come out) then dye it.
    ...Done....

I think sticking with your routine is fine. Wash it the nght before. I always color mine with products in it and I've never had an issue.

ehh it depends. i find that if i have any product in my hair when its colored, the color is more likely to come out uneven. i dont wash my hair every day, nor do i use any product on a regular basis. so i just color my hair after a day or two of no shampoo

    Thanks ladies
I'll probably just stick to what I've always done - I couldn't go 24 hours, because my hair is a disaster with no product
I wish they weren't so vague! That's always confused me, lol. I'm glad you all have a handle on it!
    Oh, hey. I'm back!
