Returned check on credit history? - Ask Rich / Money 101

We're going through our credit reports trying to clean them up and DH and I notice that he has a returned check listed as "Charged Off Account Returned Check".

I'm not sure what our next steps should be. Should we write to the check services company (Certegy) and request more information on the transaction? Should we write to Equifax and request it be removed from the report? What if the check did end up going through and this is just sitting on the report looking like bad debt?

How long ago was it? Does he recall the check at all?

He also might want to check the town it was written in and make sure it wasn't turned over to the circuit court for a hot check.

It was in 2003 or 2004. I haven't asked him yet if he recalls the check but I'll do that later. Ugh. His credit is one big hot mess.
