USAA Credit Card question - Ask Rich / Money 101

My husband had a USAA credit card in his name. I was nowhere on the account. He has recently passed the past January. Am I still responsible for the balance owed on that account considering I wasn't on it anywhere?

No you are not responsible because its not in your name. You can pay it if you want to but your husband is responsible

Oh i forgot to add. Since he has passed (sorry bout your lost). You dont have to pay any of the bills in his name. If you start to pay them then you are responsible.

No debt is not transferred to the next of kin. You do not have to pay of his bills. Just tell the companys he passed and give them his death certificate. They will try to tell you that you are responsible but you are not. DONT FALL INTO THIS TRAP. My aunt husband died and the credit card companys would call her 24/7 to pay his bills but she wasnt on any of accounts, she dont have to pay. But if you do pay on a bill then you will be responsible.

in texas all debt is shared debt even if it is in one spouses name only. that is what I have always been told. My grandmother had to pay everything for my grandpa after he passed. Kristina I would def check with a lawyer before you pay it off.

We weren't in TX. We were in VA where are the credit cards and such had addresses for. I'm going to call USAA today and ask. They were very hepful with everything else. I was just so overwhelmed after everything happened I forgot about his USAA CC.

I always thought they were bills against his estate. So they come out of life insurance, etc..

Maybe I am wrong, it would not hurt to check with a lawyer.

I am in VA. And you dont have to pay his bills. Some companys will tell you that you have to pay so you can pay the bill off. Just to give you a warning.
