Question for people (and SOs) who got out before retirement

    Advertisements
Or, retired to a place that doesn't have any military bases around.

Do you find yourself missing having access to things like the commissary, BX, or gym?

DH and I have been discussing back up plans since his would-be final enlistment is inching closer and we're evaluating other options. Recently we visited the commissary and BX, which I hadn't been to in about three years and I actually might start shopping at the commissary again because their prices were great and I had a long enough break to feel refreshed about it Anyway, I was just pondering and trying to figure out if I think I would really miss those types of resources.

If your SO is still in, do you think that you will miss them at all?

(I realize this is really minor, our actual decision will be based much more on new job opportunities, finances, giving up the retirement, healthcare, where DH is at with enjoying/hating his day to day, etc....I'm just curious how people feel about the much more minor stuff )

DH is a ways away form retirement but I don't think I'd miss it too much. When he was stationed in CA, we hardly shopped at the commissary/MCX the entire year we were there because it was too far out of the way.

We never lived on base and hardly ever went to the PX/commy so it's not something we missed.

Yep! Plus I'm obsessed with the local grocery store here so we don't miss the PX or commissary at all.

I'd miss the commissary but not so much the PX, mainly because I don't find it to be much cheaper on a lot of things.

Nope don't miss it. We shop at Costco and in all honesty, it's nice to get away from military and just feel like a civilian. You start feeling like a part of the longstanding community and not worrying that every few years your friends are going to move away

DH is still in, but I am so lazy to drive on base. Plus, currently on recruiting duty, a base isn't close by.

I don't normally shop at the commissary. But recently I have been buying things online from Navy Exchange online! I'd miss the discounted name brands. I buy skin care and makeup from Navy Exchange because it's cheaper than the brand's, Sephora's, Ulta's, MCX's online and store prices.

My dad is retired Navy, so I was his dependent. For the brief time, when I was too old to be my dad's dependent and before I was married to DH, I missed it all--going to the Exchange and Commisary, movie theater, free prescriptions at the Base Pharmacy, etc.
