    Medically Retired to Active Duty

My husband was in the Marine Corps for 4 years before being medically retired after an injury in Afghanistan.
We really miss our military life! Does no one have any experience in getting back in after being retired. We have heard its pretty difficult!

I've never heard of that, but I know from DH's experience it's an uphill battle to get back in as prior service, I'm not sure if they would even consider him if he is retired. Someone else might have more helpful information. Goodluck, I hope something works out!

Never heard of it after being medically retired. Good luck. It's getting harder and harder for prior service to get in, let alone someone who had big enough medical issues to end up medically retired after 4 years unfortunately.

Never heard of it happening. I know it is really hard to get in as a prior service member. I bet it would be even harder or impossible to get in as retired.

My husband couldn't even get active right off the bat, he has to be guard and then attempt active and hope it gets approved.

DB was discharged medically and after several years has just reenlisted in the past months. I don't have a ton of details on how that worked other than it went fast for him when they reevaluated him medically.

Was he medically discharged and that was the end of it or was it a medical retirement under which he is currently receiving compensation for the injury (ie disability payments)?

if he was medically retired he cannot rejoin any branch.
If he was medically discharged he may or may not be able to go back in, he can find this info out by looking at his RE code on his dd-214

Sorry it took so long for me to reply.

I guess I should have been more clear! He was medically discharges and placed on TDRL. I checked his DD-214 and his Re-entry code is a RE-3P. From everything Ive seen with this code it is possible with a waiver.

He should go talk to recruiters, really they can only be the ones to tell you anything.

He needs to go see a recruiter. Right now the chances of getting waivers are lower than they would have been at the height of the demand for more personnel. At the moment they are rather stingy with waivers. IF he would be going into an in demand MOS it might help, but it's still a crapshoot.
