Health insurance/COBRA
What are our options for health insurance? Ryan's Reserve recruiter said he gets benefits for 45 days after his EAOS? But honestly, (and no offense to anyone) I have a hard time believing anything unless I see an official document....
Also, does anyone know much about COBRA? We can sign up for this temporarily, is that correct? I know the govt pays a good chunk of it right now for unemployed people... but this won't affect our chances of getting health care in the future will it? It's better to have continued coverage, yes? I am so confused with all this junk and Ryan is worthless as far as repeating anything he learned in TAPS, so I figured I would come to the best sources. TIA! |

also if your Dh is a reservist he can get tricare reserve select for 180 a month for a family. the best thing to to is call tricare to get the best information.

From what I have heard it's not good to let health insurance lapse bc it is harder in the future to get it bc they take into account "preexisting" conditions....good luck with your decision

The military offers COBRA insurance..its for 180 days only. Rules for reservists differ than rules for active duty and elgibility requirements apply. I'd go to your nearest Tricare office to talk to them, or even just give someone in tricare a phone call. They are your best source of information.

Ohhh okay, I thought COBRA was through the state, that explains why I couldn't find a form or anything. I will give Tricare a shout... we are just wanting to utilize it until his Reserve paperwork is finalized (we are being told November/December) and then we plan on using TSR. Thanks for the help ladies and Lefty!

The Cobra was really expensive ... and we didn't get anything after his EAOS date.
On March 5, 2008, the Navy dropped us like a hot rock.

This isn't dated but let me know if its helpful. I don't know what situations make you ineligible for health care for 90-180 days after you leave the service...but I do know you need to follow the rules closely. For instance, our soldiers leaving active duty need to enroll themselves and their families BEFORE leaving active duty. Sometimes its unfortunately something they wait on and then its gone. |
